LABYRINTH by KAT GAWIN
We are dealing here with photographs, but it would be a mistake if we limited ourselves to the critique of the medium, because, an artist is, at the same time, a sculptor, a painter, and the creator of a drawing. The construction of a space, the emergence of successive planes, guides us to the belief in a “kind of life” that develops in front of our eyes.
The dynamic transformation of objects has its equivalence in the famous “Walls of Troy”, a construction to which man was eternally confined. These objects, rotating in the light, remind us, in a way, of a dance, which occurs in a mysterious place, that is, on the missing floor. These movements do not refer to a road of the humble pilgrim. They refer to the fight of Theseus with the Minotaur in the shape of King Minos, of Ariadna and of Icarus.. At the same time, the transformation determines what is meant by such terms as treason, heroism, hate, love, and freedom.
On the base of prototypes, Katarzyna Gawin imagined a world of man governed by emotions. Translating this into to-day’s speech, she created a contemporary world of symbols with roots going to the ancient world that preceded Ancient Greece.
